What should i use for catching stripers, and when?

I am planning to do a lot of striper fshing on the Hudson River in march. I live near the tappan zee bridge so march i heard is excellent for catching stripers. I was thinking about trying to fish off the piermont pier. If no luck, i can rent a boat and fish. People say that stripers can really be caught more often at night than in the daylight. If true, what can i use to catch them at night?
