Help with Encryption?

I am looking for a good website to learn about encrypting and such for beginners. I have little experience with encryptions and I would just like a good place to start. Btw I am not a lazy freeloader who is trying to learn hacking the easy way, I have tried so much to learn it I am just majorly stuck. have a good knowledge of unix and programming just in the mud for this, Can anybody recommend?
