Can you give a false identity on the phone to a collection agency?

From a legal standpoint, i'm not sure, but this has just recently happened to me when I got a new number. I said I was the person they were asking for (like you, I even filed a complaint with the fcc) I ended up getting a phone number, extension and a case number for the guy they were looking for, I called, spoke to someone in charge, and the calls stopped
