Do you think this is a misguided statement?

Many Americans I've met of all racial backgrounds (and usually of the older generation) don't really have a problem with interracial marriage. However, many said ''I feel bad for what the children will have to deal with.'' What is this supposed to mean? Is it because they think that like in their day they are expected to conform to a neatly organized categorization? Or because everyone will be inquisitive of what their ethnicity is?
